Matrilineal Project (Workshop) + Open Studio

Galeria Gachi Prieto

Buenos Aires, Argentina

Saturday, March 18, 2023

About the activity:

The participants must bring photocopies or photographs to use in the piece to be made, in which the women of the family are portrayed, as far back in the family generations that they can get. The images may also be memory artifacts: representative objects, landscapes from a trip, photographs from a particular moment, documents of immigration, birth certificates, marriage certificates, or any documents that delineate important passages in the life of the workshop participant.

The papers and utensils (scissors, glue, decorative papers, markers, etc) will be provided by the workshop, if the workshop is conducted in person.

The creation of a folding book is proposed from clippings and photographs provided by each participant. This work celebrates and defines the “matrilineal” line of each participant. In addition, it is an invitation to explore the origins and migratory paths of each family.

The general purpose of the activity goes beyond the generated piece, since it points to the importance of dialogue.

Artists from different disciplines can collaborate with women interested in the activity in general.

If desired, a further extension of this activity could involve the writing of a memoir, a recording of music, the writing of family recipes, the painting of family groups or portraits. I hope that the exchange of anecdotes, cultures, honouring and remembering the female figures of each family will foster a significant and memorable meeting space between those who participate.
